Talking In Circles – The Workshop
The opening moment of this workshop calls on participants to put into practice talking skills and challenges them to start to deeply understand what real listening means. Bill introduces participants to restorative technologies such as “check-ins”, “restorative questions” and the beautiful and deeply human use of “the talking piece”, an indigenous custom and deeply honoured tradition for communication. Bill explores the powerful and delicate truths that deep interpersonal communication can evoke.
The questions that Bill raises with a group are derived from the research that he does prior to the event and are always deliberately focused on creating the space for discussions around issues vital in an organization. From those discussions other questions will be posed which will then be addressed. At any point in the workshop, fresh “check-ins” can occur which has everyone participating to check in with the other and with themselves to make sure that the words and ideas and stories being shared are being heard and understood. The discovery that they are often not, is just the disturbing and delightful beginning of what can happen when we learn when we talk and listen in circle.
- What is my “bubble” and how does it affect my ability to hear and understand?
- Who are you to me, me to you and what is our relationship in this place and time?
- Who is our market and what are we trying to achieve?
- What are the challenges to communication and the failures that face us daily? and what can we discover from those failures?
- When do we feel like we are connecting and what are the circumstances that make for the best connections?
- Strengthening of the team and personal growth through the increased empathy and understanding of the other;
- Insights into how to better share and hear ideas;
- Specific uses of the circle and strategies in their workplace and at home;
- New perspectives which lead to new ideas and increased creativity around sometimes problematic issues; and
- A new sense of personal responsibility around communication.
