Talking In Circles – Keynote

The expression ‘talking in circles’ describes perfectly how we often feel when there is a lot of talking but no one seems to be getting anywhere. In his keynote, Talking in Circles, Bill describes how the ancient and current use of circles to aide in communication can prove invaluable, not only in getting somewhere but in identifying where you are and how then to get where you want to go. The ancient and indigenous practice of gathering to talk in circle and its use of storytelling allows for collective and collaborative wisdom to be shared and then utilized for the good of the group or tribe.

Bill discusses the latest discoveries in interpersonal neurobiology, as well as the wonderful and ancient art of storytelling. Using humour and storytelling and drawing on decades of experience in theatre and the business world, Bill invites his audience to explore these innovative, tried and proven ways of connecting, especially in difficult and challenging times. Bill also challenges us to see and know the “Bubbles” from which all of us speak and hear. Audiences are able to see and understand how we can create the space for people to hear and be heard in wonderful and deeply productive ways.

Talking in Circles can be useful for organizations who are feeling challenged by issues like: intergenerational difficulties, creative visioning for the future, team building, silos that inhibit corporate growth and effectiveness, or poor internal communication. Bill discusses such questions such as:

  • Is what we are saying what we mean?
  • Is what we are saying what people are hearing?
  • Where are our ideas really coming from?
  • How do we talk about the “tough stuff”?
  • How come I can talk to everyone but you?

Listen to Bill speak on “Talking in Circles”.

The Talking in Circles keynote can be paired with Bill’s Talking in Circles – The Workshop which takes the ideas shared in this keynote and shows how to make these ideas work practically and immediately in your workplace and community. The length of this workshop is fully customizable to client needs.

Everyone enjoyed Bill’s presentation immensely.  His personal stories were real, and ones that all could connect to.  His maritime perspective was endearing and his sense of humour was wonderful and enjoyed by all.  He was easily able to tie his world and life experiences to our world of post secondary education and to give all a sense of accomplishment for our work. It was a perfect end to our two days together.I would highly recommend Bill as a keynote in the future.  He was extremely well received, and is certainly one of the reasons that our conference was such a success –  Norma MacIntosh, Dean, Faculty of Continuing Education & Extension
