Seeing with Safety Glasses – The Workshop
This workshop creates a space and an opportunity for real exchange about safety in the workplace, at home and in the community. Seated at tables of between six to eight people, attendees are given a chance to exchange stories and work through the lessons that can be learned from those stories.
Following from the principles of Seeing The World Through Safety Glasses, participants are encouraged to discuss what a safety mindset looks like and how it could be encouraged in their particular worksite and life. The understanding of the interconnected nature of a workplace, the importance of empathy and caring between co-workers and how each affects all, is carefully explored and its implications drawn out. This all happens from a series of questions, which the participants receive after the initial exchange of stories.
- From the stories exchanged what similarities are evident?
- Going back to a few key stories – what could have been done to prevent the accident?
- What are the implications of the low reporting rates of “near-misses”?
- What is one thing each of us can do to make the safety mindset part of our daily routine?
Other questions will also arise from the discussions that will be particular to each audience and these will be discovered and explored as well. The mindset for each workplace is unique to that workplace even though the principles of safety always remain the same.
- A deep appreciation of the personal and collective responsibilities to safety in the workplace
- An ability to move from the general idea of safety to the specific reality in the workplace
- Strategies for keeping safety uppermost in the minds and actions of all involved
- Deliberate and achievable actionable items that could be made to ensure the safety mindset is operationalized at every level

Everyone enjoyed Bill’s presentation immensely. His personal stories were real, and ones that all could connect to. His maritime perspective was endearing and his sense of humour was wonderful and enjoyed by all. He was easily able to tie his world and life experiences to our world of post secondary education and to give all a sense of accomplishment for our work. It was a perfect end to our two days together.I would highly recommend Bill as a keynote in the future. He was extremely well received, and is certainly one of the reasons that our conference was such a success – Norma MacIntosh, Dean, Faculty of Continuing Education & Extension
